Last night was the end of KMFDM’s two night run at Metro, and it also marked the end of their tour celebrating 40 years of KMFDM. The Metro was just as packed as the night before, possibly even more so and the fans were excited to see the band’s big finale of the tour.
Morlocks once again got things started. They were every bit as fun as the night before with their super high energy music. Great and pretty upbeat, anthemic industrial rock that leans more on the rock than most in the genre. They seemed to play the exact same set as the night before and that’s not a criticism because their set the first night was really enjoyable so why mess with success? The crowd seemed to love them even more this night and it was clear there was a segment of the audience that was way familiar with them and into it. Go check them out if you get a chance, they are a lot of fun!
KMFDM did mix things up a bit for this final night. Between the two shows here, the band advertised that they’d be playing everything they played over the course of this tour. It wasn’t two totally separate setlists, they did play a good chunk of the same songs as the night before, but there was a good handful of songs that were different. Last night they opened with “DIY” and it was another great starter. The songs that were repeats were moved around in different parts of the set so the entire show felt quite different than the night before and the performance was every bit as good!
“Godlike” was played again for those looking for something older, they also brought back “Freak Flag” with Lucia singing and just like the night before, she was fantastic. Sascha was in top form again as well, leading most of the great industrial rock staples from their vast catalog, most of which was from the last half of their 40 year career thus far.
The lighting spectacle and energy levels were every bit as good as the night before, and for those who went to both, the two shows complimented each other nicely without feeling redundant at all. They mixed things up enough between the two shows that it felt like seeing both was the wisest choice and everyone in the audience clearly felt that way as many were there the night before. The band’s energy level never waned this night, and neither did the audience as people were dancing all over the metro and during the more aggressive numbers a pit would form in the middle of the main floor.
The band once again played around 70 minutes before briefly leaving the stage. This time when they came back out, Sascha took some time to talk to the crowd and thank everyone involved with the tour. It was nice to hear him engage with the audience as that’s not his normal behavior and it made the night feel that much more special. When he was done, they brought Anabella out again to sing “Professional Killer” and then did the same four songs after it as the night before, ending the tour and evening with “Paradise”. It was another wonderful performance and a great way to kick off the weekend!
