Riot Fest 2006 part two

Last episode we saw Secret Agent Bill, Deals Gone Bad, and Flatfoot 56 deliver their goods and left off with The Effigies about to move in on the growing Congress Theater crowd…

The Effigies took the stage while I was upstairs backstage grabbing a quick meal. I missed the first two songs they played but I peeked at the set list to check what it was that I missed. Every time I’ve seen The Effigies they have been good and this was no exception. They played a similar set to the one I saw them do when they opened for The Avengers, which meant it was heavily weighted with new material from the someday to be released new album. One glaring omission from the set was “Body Bag”! I couldn’t believe they didn’t play it! I thought that maybe they played it early when I was upstairs but a scan of the set list on stage showed that it wasn’t even on the list to be played! That was a major bummer and I think would have propelled their set to greater heights had they included it, plus it would have made the thousands in attendance quite happy. That aside, they were still as good as always. UPDATE: It turns out they did in fact open with “Body Bag”. That is the last time I let hunger get the best of me!

The Toasters were next and took the stage quickly after The Effigies cleared out. They are an old-time ska band and I never was a fan of ska so they played little of interest to me personally, but I noticed many in the crowd were enjoying their set. Since I’m in no way familiar with any of their material, I can’t tell you how it sounded compared to the records, or what songs they played. Again it’s not that I thought they were bad, they sounded just fine, it’s just not my style of music and never has been. The fact that they were an old time ska/punk band made them fit in just fine on this bill.

The Business followed. I missed seeing them in the summer due to being sick so I was looking forward to checking them out. They fell into that group of UK punk bands that I overlooked in my youth but are now starting to finally check out now. Not being too familiar with their stuff still, I don’t really know how much old stuff the set was comprised of but judging by how crazy the salamanders (skinheads) in the crowd (which there seemed to be an entire salamander army that appeared out of nowhere right when the band started) were getting, they must have been playing their hits. I enjoyed their set quite a bit and would certainly enjoy watching them again (safely in the confines of the barrier to be free from harm of course!). They played about a half an hour and not a dull minute in the set.

After running to get a quick beer (thanks Rob V!) and setting camp back up inside the barricade, I saw the Stern brothers setting up their gear on stage, which meant it was time for the mighty Youth Brigade.

To be continued…

  • I’m starting to really like the new Effigies songs. A lot.

The Business did play all their hits. It was a great set.
